Three things you should do this weekend
- Set all your devices with Prey, state of the art, opensource monitoring solution that can save your skin, when someone breaks into your apartment.
- Transfer your Google Apps accounts to self hosted mail service. I just switched to my old host (netmark.pl) where I had couple of shared accounts. Why switch from Google Apps? It seems that they sell access to accounts to companies that “scan” your mail in search of who-knows-what (for more info - listen to Coder Radio 6)
- Start backing up with new owncube - host for owncloud solution. They are fast and cheap (with nice free plan)
AMD C-60 in a netbook
Just got my hand on Aspire One with C 60 in it, this little guy deals with HD like a champ, it’s fast and responsive, stays 5h under load (not 100% load, but normal-use kind of load) and most important, it’s not even warm. Whole machine has one (ONE!) exhaust as big as VGA port and it is enough.
Native notifications with python
If you need / want to use native looking notifications under gnome and kde (AT ONCE ;)) just install python-notify (depending on your distro, just search for libnotify and python keywords) and get rollin’.
Quick sample of notification with button:
* code learned mostly from samples from web, please read docs or sth more substantial than this blog. Just do ;).
P.S. If you still use default python interactive interpreter, try ipython, it’s soooo nice!
Skype Linux issues
Just as many others - I’m experiencing more and more “message not delivered” issues on skype chats. I’ve googled right and left, tried to update my skype client (good luck with that on Linux…) but solution is nowhere to be found.
My solution for this? Just ditch skype altogether. All in all - after they started to centralize their network - it’s probably downhill from here anyway.
Which Google Talk client is best for Linux?
Ubuntu One mishap
DO NOT use Ubuntu One to sync your code between computers. I’ve just gotten my file base doubled with *.u1conflict for EVERY file I had. Almost filled my git repo with trash :|.
